What I Wish I’d Known Before Spending a Bunch of Money on Heels I Don’t Wear
How to Find Heels That Look Amazing, Feel Great, and Actually Get Worn According to a Wardrobe Stylist
We’ve all been there—falling in love with a gorgeous pair of heels, spending a small fortune, only to realize they’re too painful, impossible to walk in, or just don’t work for your feet. I’ve been through this cycle enough times to learn a few golden rules for buying heels that are not just beautiful but wearable, too. Here’s what I wish I’d known before wasting money on heels I never wear:
1. Style and Comfort Can Coexist
Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort. When it comes to heels, you need both structure and support for them to work. If you go for one without the other, you’ll end up with a pair you dread wearing.
Why Platform Heels Are Popular
Most women gravitate toward platform heels because they strike that perfect balance. The platform provides support by reducing the incline of your foot, making them more comfortable to walk in. Plus, many platform heels feature an ankle strap, which adds the structure you need to keep your foot secure.
2. Explore Alternative Styles
If platform heels aren’t your thing, there are other options that provide both support and structure:
Mules with a Thicker Heel A mule can be a great option if you choose one with a thick, stable heel for support. Look for mules that come up higher on your foot to provide the necessary structure to keep your foot from slipping out.
Kitten Heels Don’t underestimate the power of a low heel! Kitten heels offer support because of their lower height, and a slingback design adds the structure you need to keep the shoe securely on your foot.
3. Understand the Pain Points
Some heels are gorgeous but hurt like crazy. Here’s why:
If a heel lacks support (like a flimsy sole), you’ll feel discomfort in the balls of your feet.
If it lacks structure (like strappy sandals without proper anchoring), your foot will slide around, making them hard to walk in and even causing blisters.
4. Analyze the Width of Your Foot
This is a game-changer that’s often overlooked. The width of your foot plays a big role in how heels fit:
Wide Feet: A square-toe design might feel tight because they start to narrow quickly. Instead, opt for a pointed-toe heel with a longer footbed to give your toes more room.
Narrow Feet: You might have the opposite problem—your foot might slip forward. Look for styles with straps or adjustable features to keep your foot in place.
5. Nail the Sizing
Your heel size is not the same as your size in sneakers, flats, or loafers. And the height of the heel will impact your sizing:
Always try heels both a size up and a size down from your usual size.
Walk around in them to ensure the fit is just right. Too tight, and you’ll feel pain in your toes and the balls of your feet. Too loose, and you’ll slip out of them—which is both uncomfortable and unsafe.
6. Maximize Your Shoe Budget
The ultimate goal is to invest in heels you actually want to wear. By understanding structure, support, fit, and sizing, you’ll avoid costly mistakes and make smarter decisions that maximize your shoe budget this year.
Final Thought
Heels can absolutely be stylish and comfortable—but only if you know what to look for. Take the time to analyze the construction, fit, and style of your heels before you buy. Trust me, your feet (and wallet) will thank you later!
