What I Wish I’d Know Before Spending a Bunch Of Money On Jeans I Don’t Wear
How to Spend Smarter on Jeans You'll Actually Love According to a Wardrobe Stylist
We’ve all been there—investing in what we think is the perfect pair of jeans, only to find them languishing at the back of our closets a few months later. I’ve spent more money than I’d like to admit on jeans that didn’t hold up or didn’t fit the way I wanted. Over time, I’ve learned that understanding the composition of denim is key to buying jeans that not only look great but also wear well over time. If I could go back, here’s what I wish I’d known before splurging on those pairs I never wear:
1. Look at the Composition of the Fabric
The first thing I check now when shopping for jeans is the fabric label. The materials used will tell you a lot about how the jeans will fit, feel, and hold up over time. Here’s a breakdown of the most common components:
Elastane (a.k.a. Spandex or Lycra) Jeans with elastane are going to stretch out over time. Typically, if there’s elastane in the fabric (often 1-2%), I size down because the jeans will relax after a few wears. These types of jeans tend to mold to your body, but they can lose their shape faster than other fabrics.
Spandex (a more familiar elastane) If the jeans have spandex, they will stretch a bit, but they’ll also retain their shape better. These jeans are comfortable, allowing for more flexibility and movement without becoming baggy. Perfect for days when you want some give without compromising the fit.
100% Cotton If the label says 100% cotton, that means you’re dealing with rigid denim—the old-school, classic kind. These jeans don’t stretch, so the fit needs to be spot on when you buy them. However, they hold their shape incredibly well and, once broken in, can be some of the most flattering and longest-lasting jeans you’ll own.
2. Know Your Fit Preferences
Beyond fabric composition, think about how you want your jeans to fit. Do you prefer a snug, form-fitting style, or do you lean toward a more relaxed, vintage look? Knowing your preference will help guide you toward the right fabric mix.
If you want stretchy and form-fitting, go for jeans with 2% elastane or spandex.
If you want structured and classic, opt for 100% cotton.
If you want a balance of stretch and structure, look for jeans with 98% cotton and 2% elastane.
3. Save Yourself Time (and Money)
Save this post for the next time you go jean shopping. Having a basic understanding of fabric composition will save you from buying pairs that look great on the hanger but don’t serve you long-term. A little knowledge goes a long way, and trust me, you’ll thank yourself when your jeans fit perfectly and last for years.
Final Thought
Spending money on jeans isn’t the problem—it’s spending money on jeans that don’t work for your body or lifestyle. With these tips, you’ll be able to shop smarter, avoid costly mistakes, and build a denim collection that you actually wear. Because the best jeans? They’re the ones you’ll reach for time and time again.
