What I Wish I Knew Before Spending a Bunch of Money on Ballet Flats
A stylist’s guide to building a chic and wearable collection—without the regret.
Let’s be honest: ballet flats seem simple—until they’re not.
They’re often marketed as the effortless, wear-with-everything shoe. But after spending way too much money on pairs that looked cute online and didn’t work in real life, I can tell you: not all ballet flats are created equal.
When I first started building my wardrobe, I didn’t realize how much thought needed to go into something as small as a flat shoe. I focused on the aesthetic, but I didn’t consider how they’d function in my outfits, or how they’d actually feel after a few hours on my feet. So today, I’m sharing everything I wish I knew before splurging—so you don’t make the same mistakes.
1. If you’re buying your first pair, go for a two-tone neutral
This is the flat that will go with everything—without being boring. A two-tone combo (think beige and black, ivory and brown, even navy and cream) acts like a bridge between all the elements in your outfit. It adds just enough visual balance to work with a patterned blouse, a bold handbag, or even color-blocked separates.
Bonus: the cap-toe look (popularized by Chanel) is inherently polished. It gives even the most casual outfit a little structure.
2. Mesh flats are fun—but tread carefully
If you’re drawn to mesh flats right now, you’re not alone. They’re breathable, trendy, and feel like the summer update to a classic silhouette. But here’s the thing: plain mesh can sometimes read like hosiery or even make you look barefoot—especially in nude tones.
Instead, go for mesh with embroidery, texture, or embellishment. A delicate floral motif or even a subtle polka dot adds just enough contrast to make it feel purposeful—not see-through.
3. If you don’t do heels, elevate your flats
Ballet flats are often an afterthought in dressy situations, but they don’t have to be. If you’re someone who doesn’t reach for heels, then a more structured, elevated flat should absolutely be part of your style strategy. Look for details like pointed toes, grosgrain bows, ankle straps, or even metallic finishes.
This is the pair you can wear to a wedding, a client meeting, or an upscale dinner without compromising comfort.
4. Skip the jelly trend—go woven instead
The jelly flat revival is cute, but most of them lack structure and quickly start to feel disposable. Instead, opt for a woven leather or basket-weave ballet flat. It still gives you that lightweight, breathable texture—but in a way that’s far more polished and timeless.
They’re also easier to transition into fall or layer with unexpected fabrics like denim or linen.
5. Statement flats don’t have to be “loud”
I used to think I needed ruffles, crystals, or animal print to make a flat feel like a “statement.” Now I know that structure + quality + color can be the statement. Think a rich red patent leather, a bold square toe in deep forest green, or even a sculptural flat in ivory.
You’ll get so much more wear out of something that feels bold but still neutral-adjacent than you will from something that only works with one dress.
6. Don’t forget about comfort, fit, and function
This might sound obvious, but ballet flats are notorious for being unsupportive—and blister-prone. Here’s what to check before investing:
Padding: A hidden cushioned sole makes all the difference if you’re on your feet.
Elastic backs: These often cause rubbing. Look for ones with a true leather heel instead.
Toe shape: Round toes are classic, but slightly squared or almond-shaped can look more modern and flattering.
Sole material: Rubber or leather soles are a better long-term buy than foam or synthetics.
TL;DR: A great ballet flat should be stylish and smart.
It should work with your wardrobe, not against it. It should make you feel confident—not like you’re wearing something trendy for the sake of it. And most importantly, it should carry you through your day without blisters, band-aids, or regret.
