Summer Accessories That Actually Make Your Outfit
The handbags, shoes, and jewelry brands I consistently return to, and where they sit on a real-world budget
Summer is where style gets louder in the best possible way.
Hemlines rise, color shows up again, textures get lighter, and even the simplest outfits start to feel more intentional. It’s the season where people take more risks, lean into personality, and experiment in a way that winter dressing just doesn’t always allow.
And the best part is, you don’t need an unlimited budget to participate in that shift. You just need to know where to place your investment so your wardrobe keeps up with the energy of the season.
I always come back to a simple structure when I’m building summer wardrobes: accessories, shoes, and handbags do the heavy lifting. They’re what make a simple outfit feel styled instead of basic. And within those categories, there are very specific brands I consistently return to because they understand the balance between design, wearability, and price.
So instead of thinking about “splurging vs saving,” I want you to think in terms of strategic elevation, where to spend, where to pull back, and which brands consistently deliver the most style return for the price.
Handbags: the anchor piece that sets the tone
Summer handbags should feel easy, but never forgettable. They’re often smaller, more visible, and more directional—so shape and proportion matter just as much as function.
At the higher end of the budget tier (and yes, this is subjective), Staud is where I go when I want a bag that feels current without being disposable. Their strength is silhouette. Even when they’re playful, there’s a clarity in design that keeps them from feeling trend-heavy. These are bags that photograph well, wear well, and still feel relevant seasons later.
For a strong design payoff, Freja New York is one of the most consistent performers. The appeal here is understated polish. Nothing feels overworked, but everything feels considered and timeless. It’s the kind of bag that quietly elevates whatever you’re wearing without competing with it.
On the more accessible end, COS is my go-to for clean, woven bags that give the impression of minimal luxury without the price tag.
And then there’s Madewell, which remains one of the most reliable everyday options in this category. Not trend-driven, not overly styled, just consistently functional with enough design awareness to not feel basic.
For personality-driven pieces, Clare V. and JW Pei both deserve a place in rotation. Clare V. brings in color, pattern, and a slightly more editorial sensibility. JW Pei leans into statement silhouettes and occasion energy without requiring a luxury investment. Fan of the clutches here, not the everyday bags.
Accessories: the detail layer that makes summer outfits feel intentional
Accessories are where summer style really comes alive. You’re working with less fabric, which means every detail matters more, necklines, wrists, and ears become focal points instead of afterthoughts.
For everyday layering, Madewell and By Adina Eden are both strong foundation players. Madewell gives you personality, but still ease. By Adina Eden gives you built-in layering so you don’t have to overthink stacking or styling.
When you want something more directional, Jenny Bird sits at the top of my recommended threshold. The designs are modern, sculptural, and polished in a way that instantly updates even the simplest outfit. It’s one of those brands where one piece is often enough.
For more expressive or occasion-based jewelry, SHASHI is where I go when I want impact, color, texture, and a slightly more festive energy. Ettika is the layering expert, especially for pendant necklaces that build dimension without feeling heavy.
For metals and bolder silhouettes, Heaven Mayhem is doing some of the most interesting work right now. It feels modern without trying too hard, and it integrates easily into both minimal and more styled wardrobes.
Shoes: where ease meets intention
Summer shoes have to do a lot of work quietly. They need to be comfortable, yes, but more importantly, they need to look like they belong in a styled outfit, not just a functional one.
At the accessible end of the spectrum, Steve Madden and Dolce Vita are both having a real moment again. Steve Madden has sharpened its design direction considerably, leaning into more modern silhouettes. Dolce Vita continues to excel at easy, wearable shoes that don’t require overthinking but still feel put together.
For flat sandals and woven or basket-style silhouettes, Sam Edelman is a consistent go-to. It’s not about reinvention, it’s about reliability. These are shoes you can wear repeatedly without them losing shape or relevance.
Madewell is a dependable everyday space for shoes as well. Madewell leans more quiet, it girl. Often taking similarities with brands like Miu Miu or even giving Khaite if you will.
The key with summer shoes is repetition. The best pairs aren’t the ones you wear once and love—they’re the ones you reach for constantly because they never stop working.
These are the brands I return to again and again because they understand that balance. They don’t require you to overspend to look styled. They just require you to place your investment where it actually shows up, in shape, in detail, and in repeat wearability.
Thinking of doing the flip next week: Brands Worth the Investment, thoughts??
