Five Things I Wouldn’t Re-Buy (as a Wardrobe Stylist) If I Had to Build My Closet From Scratch
Because some “basics” are actually holding you back.
Hot take: there are pieces everyone says you need—but if I was rebuilding my closet today, I wouldn’t buy them again. Not because they’re terrible, or unwearable, but because there are simply better options that make your outfits more interesting, more flattering, and more you.
Here’s exactly what I mean (plus what I’d buy instead).
1. The Basic White Tee
I know, I know. Everyone swears by it. But honestly? There are so many structured staples that layer just as easily and still give your outfit more intention and shape. Whether your style leans bold, classic, quiet luxury, or somewhere in between, a structured vest or a crisp poplin top instantly looks like you styled on purpose—not just grabbed what was clean.

2. A Blue Denim Jacket
This is the layering piece everyone automatically pulls out for spring and summer—and that’s exactly why I’d skip it. There are so many more interesting denim options on the market right now: taupe, off-white, eggshell, even coated black that looks like leather. They give you the same easy vibe, but feel far more elevated and unexpected.

3. Bodysuits
Yes, they create a clean line. But I’d go for structured tops instead—vests, corset-inspired shapes, or even a thick cotton tank with a sharp neckline. They’re way more flattering (and comfortable) than constantly tugging a bodysuit back into place. Plus they give your outfit more personality and structure.

4. White Sneakers
Controversial maybe, but hear me out: the stark white sneaker is everywhere. If I was starting over, I’d go for a cream pair instead. It’s softer, easier to pair with other neutrals, and doesn’t look quite as harsh with outfits that already have a lot of contrast. Want to take it a step further? Choose a pair in a fun knit texture—it’s a small twist that makes a huge impact.
5. Bright White Jeans
Similar idea. Instead of a bright white, I’d go for cream or off-white denim. It feels more intentional, plays well with both warm and cool tones, and is a lot easier to keep looking fresh. I’m also loving the pair I’ve linked with a subtle black piping down the side—it’s a tiny detail that makes the entire outfit feel more styled.

The takeaway?
Your wardrobe should work for you, not make you work harder to style it. By skipping these overdone basics and picking pieces with better shape, texture, or unexpected neutrals, you’ll make getting dressed simpler—and way more fun.
